Which of Which?! Is it more important to understand or to remember (remind- recall)? ………..and before & after that (lastly) is it a real duality? First of all (At first), for the sake of science progress, for the benefit of successful research works, and looking at the future …. It will be of utmost importance (necessity) to understand, understand & understand. They are the questions "How? … Why? …. and Explain? "Which could be considered the keys for development of science, improvement of our capacities and growing up in a step-lather way toward a better quality of life? But from the other point (side) of view - the patient’s one- …. The case is not the same. Our patients are our targets … and we should not forgett – being doctors- that the patient’s state … the present state... is all that he needs from his doctor to deal with … not the future which he … and us (we) of course –may or may not survive to that future . The patient just wants to no what is wrong with him, which disease he has and what is the solution for his problem .The patient will get more benefit from answering the questions "what? How many? … And enumerate? … "Than from the previous questions" How? … Why? And Explain?"… In fact, science starts –in most instances –with observations which remain in need for elucidations for a variable time e.g the oncogenic effect of many substances as tar, sun exposure is well–known for a long time while the file of mechanism of this oncogenesis had not yet been completed . But lastly is there a contradiction between both understanding & reminding. In my opinion, there is no, both are complementary. To be more precise, without the former the latter will not be possible in our next days. How? …for example, a given disease in the past … had become –nowadays– different types, subtypes, forms …The relatively limited number of skin diseases in the past are know thousands & potentially milions . Moreover, a given , disease – tinea corporis for instance –has psoriasiform , eczematoid and many other forms and a simple question as why the lesion is in unilateral, asymmetric distribution may be the major clinical clue to diagnosis . For each individual character of the lesion ask why?… why it is pigmented ? Why the pigmentation is – qualitatively – either brown or bluish? Why is it – quantitatively –heavy or light pigmentation? Why another is telangiectatic? why itchy?… why?.. why?.. Don't consider it a waste time ; no matter how long the time you spend trying to find answers to your question it will be of great value ; the explained , reasonable data will be never forgotten forever on contrary to other (compact – solid –blind ) data which will need to be studied many times to be lastly hardly- if ever- remembered . Information which had been changing along (over) years in the past , now are changing every day and , moreover, these changes which were getting access to our minds slowly by Journals & old ways of transportation , now are at hands immediately by internet and who knows what will happen tomorrow .Could we imagine that our human minds, depending only -or mainly- on the memory capacity ,can follow these changes& get optimum benefit from them ?,I don’t think so. We will be in bad need of (for) thinking…. to remember ( understanding will be necessary to recall). "How?" Will help "how many?" and "why?" will support "what". In my opinion, "now" is the time at which we could not enumerate without explanation.
So, we have to insist to ask ourselves these understanding questions, whatever their answers are obscured and getting them is hard, because this is the only way. But because science had not reached its end line ( and will never do ) , theres will always be questions without answers .What could we do in such a situation?
There is two ways for solving this problem while waiting for uncovering of its secrets. The first is to link the information to any linker … song, poem …, alphabetical model... a joke or something like that. You also may be pleased by extending the process of linking between different systems of the body. For example : whenever you find the term BMZ (basement membrane zone in skin, semineferous tubules, blood vessels) do not hesitate to connect &compare altogether . This of course would take more time & effort, but at the same time would reinforce & fix the data more in your memory.
The second possibility is that you will –at that time –remember that information which had exhausted you by all means and you failed either to understand its exact nature or to link it to another thing.
And let us see what we have
- It is not a book to start with.
- They are concepts, comments &occasionally proposals.
- Read the subject from any source, then you can see what is written here you will find that:
Some concepts I had missed, you not
Some others you may missed, I tried to explore
Some we both missed – ALLAH help us.
